Focus - What Zone Are You In?

The Fulling team has begun a new video lesson! Each week in our staff meetings, we watch a culture & leadership video to aid in our professional and personal development. We are currently watching the Focus series from Jon Acuff. Follow along each week as we learn from Acufff the practical ways to reorient our attention from the things that don’t matter to the things that do.

In this portion of Acuff’s lesson, he shared a method to help you make better use of your time. This method is the “four zones method” which helps you categorize your activities based on their value and energy cost (see image).

“Making better use of our time,” said Acuff, “requires that we maximize value while giving the right amount of energy to the right things.” You can think of it as seeking a good return on your investment.

Food for Thought

  •  In the last 7 days, what activities were in the Distraction Zone for you? For our team, we thought of the time we spend on our phones, social media, binging TV shows, email inbox and endless chores.

  • Acuff said that most people spend the majority of their lives in the Urgent Zone. Do you think he is right in this assertion? Is it true for you? A thought our team had was that we should ask others when a task is due so we can manage our time better, rather than assuming it has to be done now.

  • If you could eliminate an activity from your Urgent or Distraction Zone, what high-value activities could you have the margin to begin practicing?
