Habitudes - The Golden Budda
The Fulling Management & Accounting team has started watching a new video series! Every week in our staff meetings, we watch a culture & leadership video to aid in our professional and personal development. The series we’re watching now is by Dr. Tim Elmore and is based on his book Habitudes - The Art of Self-Leadership. Follow along as we learn about self-leadership.
In the second video of the series, Dr. Tim Elmore shares with us the story of the Golden Budda. There was a large concrete statue of Budda in the middle of Bankok, Thailand. No one paid much mind to it. It was dirty and surrounded by garbage. Then one day a priest decided to have it cleaned but when they moved the statue it cracked. It turned out that beneath the concrete shell was the world’s largest piece of sculptured gold! No one had cared about the statue before. No one knew the value that laid beneath the shell. Dr. Elmore says that you are like this statue. “Your real value is inside, if you would only take inventory of it,” he says.
Taking inventory, whether that be of physical items in a store or of the unique strengths you possess, helps you know what you have. “Once you know what you’ve got, you can go about your business with confidence,” says Elmore. When we evaluate our strengths and take the time to develop them, we can do great things. Don’t listen to those who only see the flaws in you and tell you “No”, listen to the true strengths inside you and show the world.
Food for thought…
Now, take inventory of your strengths. As you evaluate your personal inventory, what are 1 to 2 examples of the following?
Qualities - Positive attributes of your personality.
As our team went through this lesson and exercise, one group identified that they have a “glass half full” mindset and enjoy helping others. Another quality mentioned was being able to remain calm in the midst of chaos.
Abilities - The gifts that add value to others.
Passions - Desires you love to pursue.
A passion that our team members have is when a client makes a breakthrough and understands their accounting numbers after we have spent time explaining it to them.
Opportunities - Circumstances that give you the chance to use your potential.
Affirmation - Words of recognition you’ve received from others about your potential.
As we shared our personal “inventory items” it was neat to hear the team affirming the strengths in one another. We want to be more intentional about remembering and writing down affirmations we are told rather than focusing on the negatives. We would also like to affirm others more often.
