Habitudes - The Leadership Iceberg
The Fulling Management & Accounting team has started watching a new video series! Every week in our staff meetings, we watch a culture & leadership video to aid in our professional and personal development. The series we’re watching now is by Dr. Tim Elmore and is based on his book Habitudes - The Art of Self-Leadership. Follow along as we learn about self-leadership.
In the first video of the series, Dr. Tim Elmore shares with us that The Iceberg is the first rule of leadership. The 10% above the waterline represents your skill. The 90% below the water represents your character. “Lasting leaders are built from the inside out. It’s first a matter of self leadership. Learning to lead myself before I try to lead anybody else,” says Dr. Elmore.
When you think of an iceberg, do you think of the Titanic? Most people do. What many don’t know is that those on the Titanic were actually warned multiple times about the iceberg they would eventually hit but their one response was, “Shut up! I’m busy.” Thirty minutes later, the Titanic hit the iceberg. Can you believe that?! Often we are warned by others about character flaws of our own but we brush them off. “Small acts of poor judgement lead to larger acts of poor character,” says Elmore. All the damage that was done to the Titanic was done under the waterline.
The good news is that what is below the waterline supports the tip. Good qualities under the surface will support the positive acts and characteristics others see above the surface.
