Soundtrack Symbols - Make Your Soundtrack Stick

Over the last few weeks, the Fulling Management & Accounting team has been going through Jon Acuff’s video series “Soundtracks”. This series is based on the belief that many of us overthink and question our decisions. If we do make a decision, we tend to second guess it and ourselves. These are what we call “negative soundtracks”. Jon Acuff is teaching us how to flip those around and replace them with true, helpful and kind soundtracks that lead to meaningful action.

The last session we watched was on Making Your Soundtrack Stick. “It’s natural to attach meaning to the things we love, which is why seeing the symbol of our favorite brand can prompt an emotion. When creating new soundtracks, getting them to stick becomes easier when we attach our own symbol to them." - Jon Acuff. When we create a positive soundtrack it can be hard to remember them each day which means it won’t really transform our life. A helpful way to make sure these positive soundtracks stick is to find a symbol to associate with it.

For example, let’s say you hiked up a mountain and it was really hard to get all the way to the top. But once you got to the top, the beautiful view and feeling of accomplishment made it all worth it. If you want to remember that doing hard things will be worth it in the end, you could grab a rock from the mountain and take it home with you as a symbol of that soundtrack.

A symbol could be a quote on the wall, a picture of your family, a tattoo, a screensaver - almost anything! A really helpful symbol should be the following three things:

  1. Simple

  2. Personal

  3. Visible

This will help that soundtrack really make an impact on your life.

Our team broke out into groups to share what symbols we have in our lives. It was really fun to hear about the different things that are personal and important to each team member! Some symbols our team uses to make a positive soundtrack stick include: Crafts from their kids, pictures of family, Bible verses on the wall, a trinket that a friend gave them, a rock from church, tattoos, wedding rings, a window in their office, and music.

What is a symbol you keep around you that reminds you of a positive soundtrack?
