Stories & Bricks - Introduction
The Fulling team has begun a new video lesson! Each week in our staff meetings, we watch a culture & leadership video to aid in our professional and personal development. We are currently watching “Stories and Bricks” from John Delony. Delony was one of the featured speakers at the most recent EntreLeadership Summit and we will be watching the recording of his lesson from the Summit. Follow along each week as we learn how to deal with the bricks in our backpacks.
Dr. John Delony opens his presentation with some stories of the many times he has failed over the years. He has big stories and little stories. We all do. We all have moments in our life that we will always remember. These are moments that have shaped us.
Delony currently works for Ramsey Solutions as a teacher about mental health. Before this role, he spent two decades leading teams in various organizations. He goes on to say in this presentation that he wants to combine his two passions: mental & relational health and leading teams.
When Delony finished his first Ph.D. he wanted to be extremely successful. He wanted people to like him and think he was smart. Delony was a non-stop rocket. He was constantly learning, meeting with others, getting another degree, exercising, seeking the next promotion, giving another speech, etc. He always said “Yes” to any opportunity that was presented to him. Referring to his success, Delony said, “I won…. And I lost my freaking mind.” He goes on to say that even though he was in the midst of people, he was totally alone.
One day he skipped work and sporadically drove 3 hours to see his friend because he knew he needed help. His friend created a safe space for Delony to speak from his heart for the first time in his life. Delony realized that he had to relearn how to live.
Stay tuned each week to hear more of Delony’s story and how you can be a great leader.
Food for thought…
We all have stories that stick with us and influence how we behave even now. What is a story from your life that has influenced who you are now?
Is it hard for you to say “No” to opportunities? Where does that lead you?
