The Upside of Simplicity (Part 2)

The Fulling team is watching Global Leadership Networks video on The Upside of Simplicity by Juliet Funt.

“Juliet Funt explores how overcoming unproductive busyness in your work life begins with creating a culture of simplicity. Dive into developing habits that reduce overload, maximize efficiency, streamline communication, and activate untapped leadership potential within your organization.”

(13:08 - End)

Juliet encouraged us to determine if you need to use a 2D or 3D communication method for your situation.  You should use 2D which is via text or similar if it’s yes/no or basic facts you are relaying.  You should use a 3D communication method via meetings, phone, etc. to get a group together for participation or discussion.

Juliet suggested using a Yellow List as a document per person you work with to put items on there if you don’t need an answer right away on something.  Then you can schedule a debrief with that individual to hit all of the topics.  This will help minimize your email volume tremendously.

A control freak watches other people do things wrong while doing nothing.  We talked about releasing control by considering what matters enough to bring up, coaching someone up for next time, and letting kids make mistakes when they are young to help them learn.

Food for Thought

  1. How could the 2D vs. 3D communication framework help with your current emails/meetings?

  2. How could you practice letting go of control in your daily life?

  3. Is it difficult for you to delegate things to others?
