Focus - Turn Your Distractions Into Rewards

The Fulling team has begun a new video lesson! Each week in our staff meetings, we watch a culture & leadership video to aid in our professional and personal development. We are currently watching the Focus series from Jon Acuff. Follow along each week as we learn from Acuff the practical ways to reorient our attention from the things that don’t matter to the things that do.

Jon argued that many of our distractions, instead of being eliminated or limited, can be flipped as rewards. Instead of interacting with our escape pods at a time and place that is distracting, we can simply repurpose them as goals to be worked toward.

Jon discussed the reality that, often, the more complex a system or device is the more likely we are to get distracted by it. For instance, a paper book offers fewer distractions than a digital book.

At their core, the resources Jon listed in this session are meant to foster greater self-awareness and self-discipline.

Food for Thought

  • Do you have any escape pods you would like to flip?

  • What one system or device do you use that proves to be more distracting than productive? Is this system or device something that should be limited or quit altogether?

  • Outside of what’s been discussed thus far, in what ways do you seek to cultivate self-discipline in your life? What ideas do you have for other habits or activities that will sharpen your self-discipline?
