The Fulling team is continuing the video, Charismatic Communication by Vanessa Van Edwards.

During this staff meeting we watched from (47:47-end).

-Vanessa talked about how the simple gesture of leaning forward in our communication activates desire and motivation to our audience.  It’s like a bold in our written communication.  It shows emphasis, agreement and partnership.

-A good rule of thumb is to be at least 18” from your camera lens while on Zoom.  Other nonverbal cues that are good to use include an eyebrow raise and vocal affirmation or when on mute expressions such as “Ooooh” and “Wow”.

-Including purposeful and confident hand gestures in our communication improve comprehension by 60%.  When we look at someone’s hands we are able to see their intention and hand gestures provide emphasis.

-An ideal stance is to have loose arms, open torso, shoulders down, head up and visible hands as this displays competence.

-Finally, she ended with the inspiring quote: “Your charisma inspires charisma in others.”

Food for Thought

1. How far are you from your camera lens?

2. Do you naturally use a lot of hand gestures?

3. What are some of the things you'd like to work on as you consider your warmth and competence?
