Habitudes - Emotional Fuel
The Fulling Management & Accounting team has started watching a new video series! Every week in our staff meetings, we watch a culture & leadership video to aid in our professional and personal development. The series we’re watching now is by Dr. Tim Elmore and is based on his book Habitudes - The Art of Self-Leadership. Follow along as we learn about self-leadership.
Do you drive your car on Empty? Dr. Tim Elmore shares that he often drives on Empty and has run out of gas doing so. He was overly confident he could make it to his destination without refueling. Cars need fuel to work. In the same way, leaders need emotional fuel to work.
“Because leaders spend fuel more often than others they need to refuel more often,” says Elmore. Leaders can receive emotional fuel from their personal network, from those that don’t take from them but replenish them. Leaders who don’t have this network in place will use their followers to meet this need, which can lead to unhealthy situations.
Take some time to view the diagram below. Each category represents healthy relationships that will replenish you. Think of people you know that can fit into each category.
Food for thought…
Who do you have in your life that doesn’t take from you, but helps replenish you?
Sometimes one person might fill more than one category for you.
Out of the categories, which categories are the most challenging to identify someone in?
How do you / can you schedule intentional time with those that replenish you?
It may feel easier to help others rather than help and focus on yourself, but know that it is worth it. Those that truly care for you will be there to help you.
